2026 Coaches Convention Coach's Sessions
A Fresh Perspective for New Coaches
Missy Jansen

Starting as a new coach can be both exciting and overwhelming. Along with teaching skills and preparing athletes for competition, coaches are also responsible for understanding rules, safety expectations, communication with parents and administration, and managing the day-to-day responsibilities that come with leading a team.
This session is designed to help new coaches—specifically those in their first five years of coaching—navigate the responsibilities of leading a team and start their coaching journey with the tools they need to be successful. We will discuss the foundational expectations of coaching, including program organization, athlete safety, communication, and understanding the structure of the season. This course will provide practical strategies to help early-career coaches build confidence, establish strong routines, and create a positive experience for both athletes and staff.
Throughout this course, we will also cover common challenges new coaches face and provide practical strategies for managing practices, building a positive team culture, and creating a supportive environment for athletes to grow and succeed.
By the end of this session, new coaches should have a clearer understanding of their role, the resources available to them, and the steps they can take to build a strong and successful program while providing a positive experience for their athletes.
